Heavy Duty Plastic Backing for Convex Mirrors
The mirror featured here is made of heavy-duty plastic. National Safety Mirror offers three types of backing: hardboard, heavy-duty plastic, and galvanized steel. For indoor use, a convex mirror with heavy-duty backing is sufficient. It is the least expansive option. However, it is not suitable for outdoor applications. For that, you would need to choose the plastic or steel backing.
When you think of plastic backing, you may think of cheap, thin plastic. This is not the case with the backing on these mirrors. The heavy-duty plastic is rigid and thick; in fact, it is a little thicker than galvanized steel. Although steel is indestructible, we find several advantages of using plastic backing over steel.
First, the plastic backing is a lighter weight. This is significant when dealing with more oversized outdoor convex mirrors, as the wind will play an issue. Second is the additional cost of steel. The heavy-duty plastic back is significantly less expensive than the steel backing. Finally, plastic does just as well in extreme cold and heat as steel does. The steel will expand or contract more than the plastic in extreme temperatures.
These are the main reasons we recommend plastic backing over steel backing. Although there may be situations where you want steel, overall, we feel the heavy-duty plastic backing on an acrylic convex mirror is the best choice.

Selecting Mounting Brackets for Acrylic Convex Outdoor Mirrors
Two mounting brackets are used on our mirrors, the z-bracket and the telescoping bracket. The mirror size and mounting location will determine the type of bracket to use. The Z-bracket cannot support much weight and is only offered in 12”-26” sizes. The telescoping brackets will be used in more oversized mirrors, with single, double, and triple bracket options.
You will find some mirror sizes below with single, double, or triple mounting bracket options. If you choose a mirror over 36 inches and there’s any wind, we recommend double telescoping arms for mounting. When heavy winds are possible, triple telescoping arms are a clear choice. Even if you only get a 26-inch mirror, the three mounting arms choice is well worth the extra money if you are in an area where the wind is an issue.
