Convex Mirrors are an excellent choice for driveway mirrors and are often the choice because of the balance between viewing angle and size. A convex mirror offers an approximate 160-degree view, allowing drivers to see oncoming traffic. In an ideal world, customers would like to use a full-dome or half-dome mirror because of their wide-angle view over convex mirrors.
The problem, however, is that full dome and half-dome mirrors aren’t feasible to mount on poles or trees, whereas most users would mount a driveway mirror to see oncoming traffic. In addition, because of the more expansive view, one DomeVex mirror can provide a better, seamless view than two standard convex mirrors. Please see the illustrations below for a quick example.
Now, there are DomeVex Mirrors which offer a marriage between the larger view of dome mirrors and the smaller mounting of convex mirrors. DomeVex mirrors offer a deeper convex curvature on a convex mirror frame, providing a 180-degree view and up to 100 feet in all directions (depending on mirror size).
The acrylic lens offered in this product is shatter-resistant and lightweight, making it an excellent choice for outdoor driveway mirror mounting. Available in heavy-duty plastic backing with a z-bracket (for indoor use) and telescoping brackets (outdoor use), sizes from 16-inch-42-inch sizes, this is the hand-down top choice for an outdoor driveway mirror.
The acrylic lens is rugged and lightweight, providing a 20% brighter view than glass. This convex mirror’s outer rim or flange is aluminum, riveted with stainless steel bolts. This construction provides a rigid mirror that won’t bend or distort as much in windy conditions are mirrors with rubber or vinyl rims.
For more oversized mirrors, we recommend a minimum of two telescoping brackets and three in situations where the wind plays a role.
Overview of the DomeVex Convex Mirror
- The bright, lightweight, and shatter-resistant Acrylic lens is excellent for outdoor locations.
- Plastic backing – weather resistant and also lightweight. This backing protects the mirror from rain and other conditions.
- Choosing a bracket – for smaller mirrors mounted indoors, protected from the elements, a z-style bracket is sufficient. A telescoping bracket is preferred or mandatory for larger mirrors, especially if they will be mounted outdoors. Double or two telescoping brackets are recommended if the mirror is outside with low to moderate wind. In heavy wind conditions, triple telescoping brackets are recommended.
How Is the Mirror Mounted?
There are two types of mounting brackets offered with this mirror, the “z” bracket, and the “telescoping bracket.” The z bracket is only recommended for smaller mirrors and for indoor use. When mounting a driveway mirror outdoors, it is recommended to choose at least 2 telescoping brackets. For very windy locations, choose three telescoping brackets.
The images below demonstrate the four mounting styles for a convex mirror:

The Backing on the Outdoor DomeVex Mirror
This mirror features heavy-duty plastic backing, which we recommend as the most preferred backing choice for an outdoor mirror. Don’t let the word “plastic ” fool you. The plastic is 1/8” HDPE, high-density polyethylene, an incredible product. It is incredibly rigid and tough, performs well in extreme temperatures, and is resistant to weather conditions and chemicals.
The border around the backing is a continuous flat board for extra rigidity. The high-impact plastic backs are contained in an aluminum “u” channel.
