Choosing the right convex mirror isn’t just about size – it’s about finding the perfect blend of durability, clarity, and application. Let’s explore the key elements that make up your ideal mirror:
Lens Material:
- Acrylic: Bright and lightweight, 17x tougher than glass. Great for most indoor and outdoor use. Scratches easier than polycarbonate, but often polishable.
- Polycarbonate: Unbreakable champion, 250x stronger than glass. It is ideal for high-risk areas and extreme weather. May scratch slightly easier than acrylic.

Choosing a Backing Type
A common question is, “What are the differences between indoor and outdoor mirrors.” In a nutshell, the main difference is the choice of backing for the convex mirror. With outdoor mirrors, you want to choose a plastic support or galvanized steel. In most cases, the plastic back will be sufficient for outdoor conditions; however, we recommend the galvanized steel backing if the conditions are extreme.
Although the plastic and galvanized steel backings would be okay to use indoors, it will be overkill, as hardboard backing will suffice. The hardboard backing is not weather-resistant, so using it outdoors would not be a good choice.
Backing:
- Hardboard: Cost-effective for indoor use but not weatherproof.
- Heavy Duty Plastic: Durable and weather-resistant, suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. Handles moisture well.
- Galvanized Steel: Best for extreme weather conditions, offering maximum protection.

Choosing Brackets
For convex security mirrors, National Safety Mirror offers two bracket choices: the “z-style bracket” and the “telescoping bracket.” For smaller mirrors, you can use either the z-style bracket or the telescoping bracket based on your needs and preferences; however, for more oversized mirrors, the telescoping mirror, with choices of single, double, or triple brackets, is mandatory.
Single telescoping brackets are acceptable in most outdoor locations for smaller mirrors, but we recommend double telescoping mirrors for medium-sized or larger ones. For extreme wind conditions, we recommend triple telescoping brackets.
Brackets:
- Z-bracket: Simple and secure for smaller indoor mirrors.
- Telescoping bracket: Adjustable and stable for larger mirrors and windy areas. Single, double, or triple options for added security.

Weatherproof convex mirrors are made from high-quality, unbreakable polycarbonate or acrylic lenses. The backing material is the protective surface attached to the back of the mirror’s lens. It prevents the lens from damage and keeps moisture from collecting behind the lens, which will erode the reflective film over time.
All our brands are Made in the USA utilizing materials sourced in the United States. This is important because it ensures you have the highest quality materials and craftsmanship. Almost all imported convex safety and security mirrors are constructed of low-grade acrylic, which is poorly manufactured and will turn yellow over time.
- Manufactured in the USA of USA-sourced materials
- Hardboard, High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) plastic backing, and galvanized steel protective backings are available.
- Shop acrylic, or virtually unbreakable lens, polycarbonate.
If you have problems with blind spot areas, collisions at dangerous intersections, or issues with theft or loitering, shop or outdoor convex mirrors are available in various sizes, shapes, lens materials, and backing options. Our acrylic convex mirrors are shatterproof and will not leave dangerous shards if the lens receives a devastating impact. We even carry unbreakable mirrors for the harshest of industrial and weather conditions. Rectangular mirrors are ideal for low-clearance areas where a round convex mirror may be too large.

- Reduces theft and deters suspicious activity
